Utah Technology Council Names Dr. Michael Feldman Life Science Executive-in-Residence

Feldman will assist with growth and development of life science businesses and innovations in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – December 4, 2009 – The Utah Technology Council (UTC), Utah’s premier professional organization, has appointed Dr. Michael Feldman to the newly-created position of Life Science Executive-in-Residence.

UTC has created the new position in partnership with the Utah Science Technology and Research Initiative(USTAR) and Utah’s Department of Workforce Services (DWS). In this role, Feldman will work to support the growth of life science companies and programs in the state and will help to lead the development of a strategic plan for BIOVision in Utah.

“I appreciate the opportunity to work with the life science members in UTC to craft a BIOVision that will accelerate the growth of life science in Utah,” Feldman said. “Our intent is to establish the value proposition and agenda to expand the role of life science in the state’s ecosystem.”

Feldman will work together with UTC’s life science leaders along with USTAR and DWS to set a strategy direction and action plan that will identify objectives and establish deliverables and timelines to help further grow Utah’s life science companies.

Feldman brings over 20 years’ senior executive experience, including nine years in the Utah life science industry, to UTC. Prior to UTC, he served as Deputy Director of the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympic Games Drug Testing Laboratory, General Manager and SVP of Northwest Toxicology, and VP of Business Development for LabOne /Quest Diagnostics. Most recently, he was President, CEO and Director of BioMicro Systems. Michael Feldman has a Bachelors in Biological Sciences from Rutgers University and a Masters of Science in Biochemistry from Drexel University. He also holds a doctorate degree in Drug Metabolism and Biopharmacy from Chelsea College, University of London.

“It is important that we do all we can to harness the life science innovation in our state,” said Ted McAleer, executive director of USTAR. “This new UTC position will help the life science community gain a stronger voice and to help channel all of the innovation and ideas that already exist in this field.”

“Utah has a vast amount of talent and know-how in the life science realm,” said Kristen Cox, executive director of the Department of Workforce Services. “This new position and partnership with UTC will make it easier for us to keep this talent in state.”

“Michael’s experience speaks for itself, and we’re confident that he’ll make an immediate impact on the life science industry in Utah,” said Richard R. Nelson, president and CEO of UTC. “It is vital that we do everything we can to grow and stimulate life science initiatives and businesses as they are a great boon to Utah’s economy and business community.”
