Utah Technology Council Voices Support for Governor Gary Herbert’s Budget Recommendations; Continuing to Drive Utah Technology and Quality Workforce
January 11, 2010— The Utah Technology Council (UTC) (www.utahtech.org) supports the principles outlined in Governor Gary Herbert’s budget recommendations for fiscal year 2011 which include:
• Protecting public and higher education by keeping funding steady
• Avoiding exacerbation of the budget’s structural imbalance
• Retaining a responsible balance in the State’s Rainy Day Fund
• Imposing no tax increases
“Creating and maintaining a quality workforce is our industry’s number one issue,” stated Richard R. Nelson, President and CEO of UTC. “Technology companies understand the importance of rigor and relevance and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) in both public and higher education. The workforce generated by Utah’s schools is the major driver of innovation in Utah’s high-growth technology companies, and we are encouraged that the Governor highlighted the importance of education in these principles.”
Utah is in a prime position to be among the first states to recover from the current economic downturn. These principles will help ensure that Utah will continue to be economically healthy and friendly to business.
