The Utah Technology Council (UTC,
www.utahtech.org), Utah’s premier technology association, in conjunction with Grow America (www.growam.com), is bringing an editor and a writer from the New York Times to meet with Utah’s small businesses on March 6, 2013. Loren Feldman, small business editor of the New York Times (bio), and Jay Goltz, a long-time small business owner who writes the Thinking Entrepreneur column for New York Times’ You’re The Boss blog, will present to Utah’s small business owners (bio).

Loren Feldman Loren Feldman is the small business editor of The New York Times. Before joining The Times, Mr. Feldman was editor of Inc.com and deputy editor of Inc. magazine. He has also been editor of FastCompany.com, editor of Philadelphia Magazine, and executive editor of George magazine. In addition, he has been a top editor at Money, The American Lawyer, and Manhattan, inc. His writing has also appeared in GQ and The New York Times Magazine. He received a bachelor of science in economics from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.

Jay GoltzJay Goltz, who writes Thinking Entrepreneur, started his custom frame shop, Artists’ Frame Service, right out of college. That business has grown from $70,000 in revenue in 1978 to become the largest picture-framing store in the country, with more than 20 times the revenue of the average framing shop. Mr. Goltz, whose companies employ more than 100 people and produce more than $13 million in revenue, also started and runs Chicago Art Source and Jayson Home & Garden. He has been featured in an Inc. magazine cover story, is the author of “The Street-Smart Entrepreneur” (Addicus Books, 1997), and has written a monthly column for Fortune Small Business. He also serves as a mentor with the William J. Clinton Foundation’s Urban Enterprise Initiative. (Listen to a KPCW interview with Jay Goltz, February 18, 2013)

Feldman and Goltz will discuss what they are doing at the New York Times for small businesses and will give examples of the kinds of topics and stories they cover. Lead columnist Goltz will then talk about his 30 years of trial-and-error experience as a business owner and will share the lessons he’s learned.

Registrants will be invited to submit a business description and a key issue they would like to discuss. Feldman and Goltz will retain all descriptions as potential ideas for their future article files. They will select three business owners to call forward during the event for a live dialogue about their business experience. Following these vignettes, Feldman and Goltz will also field questions from the attending audience.
